Growing an Areca Palm tree or Butterfly Palm (
Dypsis lutescens) indoors is ideal because it grows very slowly and thrives in bright, indirect light and cramped space with its clustered palms that resemble bamboo. With origins from Madagascar and South India, this palm's natural climate is subtropic, which can be imitated indoors. Once and endangered, species the Areca palm has become one of the world's most recognizable plants.
How to care for Palms:
Lighting: Indoor palms can suffer from too much or too little light. Symptoms of too much direct sunlight include gray or brown-colored scorched leaves and leaves that shrivel and die. Most indoor palms require natural bright light all year.
Water: Palms need to be kept moist, but you should never allow them to dry out or sit in water. You can allow the soil of the palm to dry out slightly below the surface between waterings during active growth and allow the soil to dry out a little deeper between waterings in winter.
Temperature: Indoor palms require warm temperatures. The ideal temperature is between 60o - 70o F during the day and about 60o F at night.
